SOUTH AFRICA EASTERN CAPE VILLAGERS TO BUILD TEMPORARY BRIDGE

Eastern cape villagers are making plans to build a temporal bridge for its resident after the one built by the government collapsed less than a month ago due to heavy rainfall.

The problem has affected the area during these past months which have made business owners and residents used their own money to buy materials to construct a makeshift bridge so they can continue travelling to and from town.

The bridge which connects villagers from Maqwathini in Lupapasi and surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape to essential amenities in a town like shops and clinics collapsed during heavy rains in December 2021.

The current challenges have made residents had to cross the river using the crumbling structure as Maqwathini Village is under Emalahleni Local Municipality.

According to a report, Qush Plant was hired in November to construct the project at a cost of nearly R8 million. They were meant to construct the road, including the bridge, which was still underway when the company halted work for the December festive period.

However, when heavy downpours hit at the end of December, the temporary bridge was partly washed away, making it dangerous for cars and people to cross.
